Position Summary:

DEPUTY EDITOR, GETAWAY MAGAZINE

 

If you love travelling, writing and can take excellent photographs, this may be the job for you. 

Getaway magazine is looking for a deputy editor, someone productive and driven who has experience in producing excellent travel content that engages and entertains. Accuracy is vital. 

Getaway is a heritage brand with the following pillars: photography, wildlife/nature, overlanding/camping, gear, urban & culture, food, affordable accommodation, so the applicant should have a solid knowledge of most of these fields. 

You must have understanding of managing a team and broader resources, a collaborative and positive energy, and a willingness to work closely with the editor and the team to produce a world-class travel magazine.

 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES: 

The position needs someone with strong creative and managing skills, editorial vision and creative-thinking. 

This requires an energetic individual with a committed work ethic, and someone who is able to travel. 

Cost and time management are important skills for this position, not only for their own productivity but also to help drive and manage the team. Understanding digital content and how to span both print and digital mediums will be extremely useful. 

Knowledge of the SA tourism industry and what motivates South Africans to travel is also necessary. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Writing engaging articles, and producing images (and video) that powerfully illustrate them.

• Managing and commissioning freelancers.

• Re-writing and editing content, where necessary.

• Managing and mentoring junior writers.

• Brainstorming and producing content that is fresh, relevant and on-trend for the Getaway readership.

• Helping to manage and plan the editorial budget and keep costs within said budget.

• Compiling, with the team, content lists and communicating these to the advertising team.

• Ensuring that content is on-brand and satisfies all pillars of the brand, from the articles through to the layout.

• Helping to brainstorm ideas for advertorial content and competitions.

• Answering editorial queries.

• Brand ambassador.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

• Appropriate tertiary qualification (English / Journalism / Media advantageous) 

• Valid driver’s license 

• Valid passport

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• A good understanding of all content platforms (print and digital) and the ability to fully integrate these into the content offering

• Highly skilled in English writing

• Experience in the travel industry

• 5 - 7 years in a mid-level role, running professional teams with a proven track record of success

• Excellent photographic skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Proven team leadership skills

• Excellent time management skills
