Highbury Media (Pty) Ltd is SA’s largest independent magazine and digital publishing company responsible for some of the country’s best-performing titles. We are currently looking for a Junior Copy Editor for the Copy-Editing Department to work on our lifestyle magazines. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• Fact-checking and correcting factual errors in the copy 
• Correcting language and grammar errors
• Ensuring appropriate style and tone is used in accordance with the requirements of a specific magazine 
• Ensuring that all copy is reader-friendly (i.e. easy to understand and a pleasure to read)
• Checking consistency of straps, blurbs, captions, pull quotes, fonts, and general design style
• Checking that bylines and credits are correct, and cross-checking page numbers against the latest flat plan
• Helping to maintain the overall editorial standard of excellence
• Alerting Chief Copy Editor to potential problems in the production schedule
• Continuously updating the HM Style Guide for the various titles being worked on

Requirements:

• Have a good general knowledge and be able to handle copy on a wide variety of topics, from motoring and health to fashion and travel
• Be able to use the internet as a research tool in a critical and informed manner
• Communicate effectively with editors, art directors and designers 
• Be proactive, self-disciplined and a good team player
• Be able to work accurately and professionally under deadline pressures
• Be prepared to work overtime if the need arises on print deadline days
• Be set up with a stable internet connection at home for work-from-home purposes 
• Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher is advantageous
