Highbury Media (Pty) Ltd is SA’s largest independent magazine and digital publishing company responsible for some of the country’s best-performing titles. We are currently looking for a Features Writer for our Editorial department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Content generation
-Brainstorm fresh and original story ideas to assist in the development of synopses
-Write well-researched, balanced features that fulfil briefs, incorporating expert comment and real life stories. Commission freelance writers and follow-up for submission
-Research and compile shorter articles that fulfil briefs, incorporating expert comment and real-life stories where necessary
-Source and write snippets for news, op-ed and review pieces
-Come up with creative headers and blurbs for all pieces
-Source accompanying images when required
General responsibilities
-Ensure all content produced is engaging, reader-friendly, and of a high standard
-Show an understanding of writing for different audiences, including adapting language and tone for children and teenagers
-Keep abreast of current affairs, celebrity news, and style trends
-Develop your sources and contacts within professional networks
-Show initiative and the ability to work unsupervised
-Exercise good time management and meet all deadlines
-Fact-check and self-edit all work
Staff interaction
-Assist staff writers and interns in the absence of the editor
-Liaise with the features editor, magazine editors, design team and fashion department when required (be it chasing sources for additional info, following up on requests or providing contact details or images)
-Display and encourage good teamwork, for example bouncing story ideas around or workshopping an article with the other writers
Requirements:
-Previous writing experience
-Have an interest and knowledge of social media
-Work according to very strict deadlines
-Have an excellent command of the English language
-Function well on his/her own but also in a team
-Diploma or relevant qualification in journalism
