Highbury/Ramsay Media (Pty) Ltd is an independent magazine and digital publishing company responsible for some of the best performing titles. We are currently looking for a Managing Editor that will work across both Popular Mechanics and AA traveller magazines. The successful candidate would need to be interested in how the world works, DIY, science, engineering, the outdoors, gear, gadgets, travel and technology.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
-Work as Managing Editor on Popular Mechanics and AA traveller (which includes the Afrikaans version, AA reisiger.)
-Assist the Editor in brainstorming content for the magazines.
-Create ‘job bags’ for magazine features, and ensure the seamless flow of these between the Editor, themselves, the copy editors and the design team.
-Keep the various production-schedule spreadsheets filled in and up to date.
-Perform editing work (copy editing) on magazine articles and features.
-Work closely with the Editor and copy editor team, querying editions and changes where required.
-Liaise with the advertising sales teams on Popular Mechanics and AA traveller.
-Liaise with Popular Mechanics USA.
-Answer queries from the design teams of both magazines.
-Assist in managing the editorial budgets.
-Communicate with the translator for AA reisiger magazine, and prepare and share English content with them.
-Assist with commissioning and management of freelance contributors.
-Research and write content for the magazines, with a high degree of accuracy and in the correct tone – in the form of regular sections, and/or special features.
-Field and filter queries from PR agencies, and ad clients.
-Be the primary point of contact for the editorial team, when the Editor is not in the office.
-Keep the Editor informed of the magazines’ progress, and keep the production systems flowing in the Editor’s absence.
-Copy edit digital content for Popular Mechanics web and social media platforms.
-Assist in overseeing the editorial intern.
Requirements:
-Three-year tertiary qualification in English or journalism
-A minimum of three year's work experience in the media industry
-Excellent copy editing, writing and organisational skills
-Proficient in InDesign and the Mac operating system
